Sowing Winds & Reaping Whirlwinds

Hosea 8:7

Listen To The Sermon

Intro: The prophet Hosea speaks the Word of the Lord, “They have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” As the husbandman reaps the same kind of grain which he has sown, but in far greater abundance, thirty, sixty, or one hundred fold; so he who sows the wind shall have a whirlwind to reap. The humble seed shall be multiplied into a mighty tempest; so they who sow the seed of unrighteousness shall reap a harvest of judgment. This is a familiar theme in the Word of God:

Gal 6:7‑8 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Job 4:8‑9 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

Hosea 10:13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.

Prov 22:8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

Jer 12:13 They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.

The Great Actual Price of Sin Is Always Far Greater Than the Small Advertised Price!

I. Some Sowed To The Winds Of Greed:

A. Ahab sowed to the wind of Greed for Grapes but reaped the whirlwind of Dogs to Lick His Blood! I Kings 21

B. Achan sowed to the wind of Greed for Garments but reaped a whirlwind of Stones and cursing. Joshua 7

C. Rich Fool sowed to the wind of Greed for Greatness but reaped a whirlwind of unexpected illness. Luke 12

D. Gahazi sowed to the wind of Greed for Gain in God’s Service but reaped a whirlwind of leprosy. II Kings 5

II. Some Sowed To The Winds Of Lust:

A. David sowed to the wind of Lust for Pleasure, but reaped a whirlwind of destruction in his family. II Samuel 12

B. Nebuchadnezzar sowed to the wind of Lust for Power, but he reaped a whirlwind of helplessness in insanity. Daniel 4, Tree cut down, and Nebuchadnezzar was cut down too!

C. Cain sowed to the wind of Lust for Preeminence, but he reaped a whirlwind of guilt, loneliness, and emptiness. Not a one of his descendants listed in the Bible ever did anything for God. They all died in the flood! Genesis 4

III. Some Sowed To The Winds Of Rebellion:

A. Belshazzar sowed to the wind of Rebellion against Sacredness, but he reaped a whirlwind of the sacred God’s judgement. Daniel 5

B. The Prodigal Son sowed to the wind of Rebellion against Separation, but he reaped a whirlwind of hunger and shame. Luke 15

C. Saul sowed to the wind of Rebellion against the Scriptures (He refused to do the command of God), but he reaped a whirlwind of rejection by God. I Sam 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

IV. Some Sowed To The Winds Of Worldliness:

A. Lot sowed to the wind of Worldliness due to his Family, but he reaped a whirlwind of judgement that cost him his family left him with two illegitimate babies from incest! Genesis 13

B. Naomi sowed to the wind of Worldliness due to a Famine, but she reaped more death and emptiness than hunger would have ever brought about! Ruth 1

Conclusion: Sow what you will, but remember, there is a reaping day. Hosea 10:12 “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” Today is the day to begin sowing good seed. Today is the day to get saved and do right. Some of you that are saved have been sowing seeds to winds of the flesh; if you don’t get it right today, you will have a whirlwind on your hands soon. Now is the time to get it right with God. It is time to seek the Lord that he might rain righteousness on you!
